UNDEFEATED
SWC 7-0 in Bowl Games!

What an end to the year... Every single old SWC team in a bowl game won! C-USA and the MAC were 4-1, Big XII was 6-2, and even the overhyped SEC was only 6-3! Full details here. Too bad @ttuberville ruined Tech's team beyond any participation in the bowl season!

SWC 5-0 in Bowl Games!
How about that! So far TCU, Texas, Baylor, A&M, and Houston have all won their bowl games! Extra Kudos to RG3 for doing it in stunning fashion and to U of H for hitting an all-time record with 13-1! My only complaints: should have been more people in the Cotton Bowl, and Baylor wore green helmets... and seriously, the bear claw pants need to go!

SWC Bowl Wrap-up
After a rather disappointing end to the regular season, let's move the focus to bowl games.

First off, Tech's record of being the ONLY team to go to a bowl EVERY year since the inception of the Big XII is dead. 11 straight bowl games - started by Dykes, culminated by Leach and destroyed by TuberFAIL. I guess that should be expected of a rebuilding year... oh wait, we didn't need rebuilding UNTIL TuberFAIL came along!

Poinsetta Bowl - TCU
Holiday Bowl - Texas
Alamo Bowl - Baylor
Texas Bowl - Texas A&M
Ticket City Bowl - Houston
Jerry World Bowl (formerly known as the Cotton Bowl) - Arkansas
BBVA Compass Bowl - SMU

Yea, do the math. The ONLY former SWC teams not going to a bowl is Rice AND Texas Tech. In fact, we only beat Rice by one win this year... How embarrassing! The FIRST to WORST era of Tuberville continues...

RGIII wins Heisman!!!

Congrats to Robert Griffin III! Pretty impressive voting stats! Guess I had been under a rock because it was a huge surprise to me. RGIII joins Davey O'Brien, Earl Campbell, John David Crowe, Andre Ware, and Ricky Williams!

HULLABALLOO!

As mad as I am at my Ags, I can't not cheer for them! Headed to Kyle Field for the epic last game "in a while". Love the hoopla of the game when it is in College Station! It's just another corps trip boys, we'll follow the band in! Check the full blog for updates once I get there (I can post to that one from my phone)!

Coogs survived ESPN Gameday
Still undefeated... way to go! And THIS is a REAL kid! Well done representing!

No wonder Tech Lost
God help me... TuberFAIL continues to completely tear apart an exciting, successful football team. How can one man take us from the greatest school win in history to the worst lost in school history in 15 games??? Well three men - him, Kent Hance, and #CraigJamesSonIsApussy. So sad - and look at this crap! What the hell? Boooooring!

Where's the Bucket?

No really, State Farm - where's the damn bucket? Yea, yea Houston won it back in alarming fashion (and a similar score to the last time they were ranked in 2009)... but I have major beef with the logo. I give you kudos for the "presented by" and I love the color scheme... but WHERE'S THE BUCKET
All they had to do was this!

Welcome back Horned Frogs!

But you are going to need to lose that Black for Black Sake (BFBS) crap on the unis! Clearly, the Big 12 got the better deal here! Since the end of the SWC, the Aggies have posted four top 25 final rankings. TCU has posted eight - four of which are top 10 final rankings! Bowl games wins also shine on TCU - Aggies are 1-9 since the SWC disbanded. TCU is 8-4 (and two were BCS bowls)! Last year, TCU went undefeated! Since 2005, they have the best record of all FBS teams in Texas. More numbers breakdown on the full blog at the link above!

What an ugly weekend!
While there were a couple of tough losses for me, the SWC teams have some pretty decent records at this point. Most teams have only one loss, and look at UofH... undefeated still! But the big story is the heated rivalry between Tech and A&M. A completey irresponsible tweet (he hasn't even deleted it - what a jerk!) by the A&M athletic director (having not even seen the buses) turned into a huge news story - covered by every newspaper, news website, and news station in America. But how many covered the truth? It was shoe polish and fish bait - not spray paint and feces! As each week logs another "last ever game with A&M", I realize that it is really happening. I am so disgusted with my ex-alma mater, I may find it hard to pull for them on Thanksgiving Day... Throwing away tradition after tradition for dirty money - wonder if they will change the fight song too? Money and corporate greed have RUINED this sport.

Red River Rivalry

What time is it?

Dual Duels in DFW

SMU takes back The The Iron Skillet Trophy which has a mysterious history. In 1946, to avoid mutilation of school property, the SMU student council proposed getting a trophy (something comparable to the Little Brown Jug). About seven weeks later an aluminum skillet was purchased. And as announced in the Nov 26th Dallas Morning News, The Battle for The Iron Skillet was born. Lots of pics and links on my full blog.

Oh, and the Aggies blow another SECond half to rip defeat out of the jaws of victory. Ugh! Maybe we should just bring back the SWC!

White Helmet Surprise
I normally get all worked up when Baylor wears their stupid white Nike-fied helmets. And I did on Saturday when I first tuned into my SWC matchup game, deciding to pretend it was 1971. Because... Baylor just wears gold helmets - it's like an unwritten law. Only a few years (until recently) did they ever not wear gold. Rice has worn a slew of helmets (and I pretty much LOVE every single one of them... even the script R because it points to the sport they are more known for). Do I love when Rice wears the white pants with silver and navy stripes? Hell yea! And should Baylor have pant stripes instead of that jicky piping crap? Hell yea! But it was pretty quick into this game when I realized that it was a beauty.

Longhorn Logo Legacy

Fifty years ago this week, Darrell Royal put the infamous Longhorn silhouette logo on the football helmets! He asked a local sporting goods merchant to draw something up. Upon Rooster's reveal of his design (rendered in crayon), Darrell put it on the helmet for the Cal game. That was September 23, 1961! But they got some Bevo cartoon dates wrong - see my full SWC Football Blog post! The article link has also been added to the left column under traditions.

Rah, Rah, Rice!
Okay, it wasn't a SWC match-up, but it sure was pretty. Rice also wore a special Stars & Stripes helmet decal to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

The Razorbacks also surprised us with a helmet logo matching the field logo! How did that red, white, blue t-shirt thing work out?
Hmmm, not so good...

Weird, all SWC teams that played in week 2 won!

Razorbacks Remember

Not so much a SWC related story - but it does involve the Arkansas Razorback logo. It has been painted red, white, and blue for thjis week's game. Story here. Of course, you can get a t-shirt (which reduces it to a nauseating commercial exploitation of 9/11).

SWC Weekend
First weekend of college football and what do I get? A SWC matchup three days in a row! Of course, Baylor pulled off the HUGE upset of TCU Friday night! What a game! And true form for a SWC matchup! Rice plays Texas Saturday. Sunday night Aggies take on SMU! What a way to start the season off!

Aggies to SEC?
More on this after I quit fuming...

Claw My Eyes Out, Please!
Baylor got bit by the Nike monster... and it's fatal. Look at this monstrosity! From exquisite to stupid! The Old Baylor Line is rolling over in its grave...

Borrrrring...
Tech unis continue to degrade. It's well known I like pant stripes - it's football! And I have put up with Tech's new fangled look because, well, they are new-fangled. Removal of the colored side panel from the pants though (leaving only the stupid piping), has brought us yet one level lower. Oh wait... what? Oh God. Ugh, Texas Tech needs to go old school so bad...

In the Wash
From a uni standpoint, not much changed this year - but what did was disastrous. See the Mini blog in the middle column for the details. Texas Tech continues to get more boring as the years pass... removal of the stupid piping from the pants usually is a good thing, not this time. Baylor continues their Nike demise with the removal of the classic pant stripes - in their place, stupid bear claw marks. Gross.

Kudos

10.29.09 - I just stumbled across your website... it's great!! -Eric

10.13.08 - Susan, I love your web-site, SWCFootball. -Jay B

09.03.08 - I had to chuckle when I read that SMU is going back to their "roots" by sporting white helmets. If they truly wished to go back that far, they'd wear all red (leather or plastic). As a native San Antonian, I remember their uniforms from the Doak Walker-Kyle Rote-Pat Knight era: red helmets (no stripes), red jerseys (no stripes), white numerals, and gray pants. No blue at all to be seen. (For what it's worth, in the 1940s I watched many a high school game with Rote and Knight in the backfield for the Jefferson Mustangs.) Much to my father's annoyance, each football season I'd plaster the windows of the family car with those Humble Oil giveaway pennants in SWC team colors. As I recall they were placed on the outside of the windows and made for difficult removal (once the season was over, that chore was mine). Keep up the good work. -Warren Thompson, Lebanon PA

09.03.08 - BTW, Susan, that’s an amazing site on SWC you have. Good work. -Justin in AR (via Uni Watch)

07.04.08 - I love your SWC site. I've put up a season-ending wrap the last two years: the final SWC standings, using Jeff Sagarin's rankings. Hope you'll check it out. Go Owls! -John Cunyus
