Kudos
08.19.11 - VERY COOL WEBSITE!!! I'm not sure I could put it more succinctly or accurately than that. - Robert D

08.15.11 - Your Southwest Conference web site is absolutely fantastic. - JDD

02.12.11 - Thanks again for putting this website up and keeping the memory alive of the SWC - Walter F.

09.01.10 - You do have a most interesting website - Bob J

11.24.09 - Fantastic website, btw -- I remember the SWC fondly...and sometimes not so fondly ;) -Jason S

11.01.09 - I found your SWC link and forwarded it to 20 friends from the UofArkansas. You have done a wonderful job. Very best regards, Uof A Razorback 66-72 -David E

10.29.09 - I just stumbled across your website... it's great!! -Eric

10.13.08 - Susan, I love your web-site, SWCFootball. -Jay B

09.03.08 - I had to chuckle whena I read that SMU is going back to their "roots" by sporting white helmets. If they truly wished to go back that far, they'd wear all red (leather or plastic). As a native San Antonian, I remember their uniforms from the Doak Walker-Kyle Rote-Pat Knight era: red helmets (no stripes), red jerseys (no stripes), white numerals, and gray pants. No blue at all to be seen. (For what it's worth, in the 1940s I watched many a high school game with Rote and Knight in the backfield for the Jefferson Mustangs.) Much to my father's annoyance, each football season I'd plaster the windows of the family car with those Humble Oil giveaway pennants in SWC team colors. As I recall they were placed on the outside of the windows and made for difficult removal (once the season was over, that chore was mine). Keep up the good work. -Warren Thompson, Lebanon PA

09.03.08 - BTW, Susan, that’s an amazing site on SWC you have. Good work. -Justin in AR (via Uni Watch)

07.04.08 - I love your SWC site. I've put up a season-ending wrap the last two years: the final SWC standings, using Jeff Sagarin's rankings. Hope you'll check it out. Go Owls! -John Cunyus

Whew, finally another SWC Game!

[Helmets above from 1974-76]
Had to wait almost a month after the slurry of early match-ups... So this is the first time Texas has been to Fort Worth since the SWC ended. It's a different world up there now. I would like to say "Longhorns, this isn't your grandpa's TCU." - but it kind of is this year. :/
Texas uni updates are in the right column now.

So... the gold turned out okay.
I have to confess... the gold was a nice addition keeping the look of the game classic. And it looked really great with that golden hat on the Longhorn's heads!

And OU still sux!
Went looking for my favorite website to tip off Red River Rivalry Weekend and it was gone... gasp! So, I whipped up some quick code as a placeholder to make do for now. Hopefully, I can make it float later like the original.

What time is it?

Red River "Golden" Rivalry

Both Texas and OU will have gold trim on their unis for this weekend's grudge match. Closeup of the golden badge. I clicked on numerours article searching for WHY they would be wearing gold... no anniversary, one article referenced the trophy - but it looks like just an excuse for Nike to sell some shit.
The fact that they added uni crap to this classic matchup is disgusting. With that basic objection being voiced, all they could come up with golden trim because the trophy is a golden hat? Weak... or maybe we should be grateful after what they came up for the NFL Pro Bowl unis.

Now I have the SMU blues...

Beautiful jerseys for SMU this weekend, but the striped pants failed to materialize. Nike problems again? Don't know, SMU Athletics wouldn't answer - probably got him in trouble last time (sorry about that). Note: the striped pants linked image above was originally on the uni release link I posted a few weeks ago. That link below now only shows the blue jersey, no pants.

Longhorn Legend James Street Dies

Well, this just sucks! He died Monday. Horns wearing JS decals on their helmets. Found this great shot of him applying a Natioanl Champions decal to his car. I guess him and Darrel and Dad are having one heck off a conversation right about now.

The Golden Dome of Baylor
No, not that one... Baylor will be wearing their gold chrome helmet this weekend. I am a proponent of Baylor wearing gold helmets - that is what they are SUPPOSED to wear. So I was going to find it hard to complain about this helmet wirth that in mind - especially while wearing green. Unfortunately, Baylor gave me plenty of ammunition by pairing the gold chrome lid with the black unis. They had ONE CHANCE to get this right... oh well. And what happened to the outline on the BU?

"Level the Bevel" Levelled?
I recently received new Level the Bevel bumper stickers in the mail. Multiple color treatments too (maroon and white ones). Now, I realize the timing - a vote was recently held via the student election. Awesome play by Aggie Admins - because they knew the 4500 students who voted wouldn't really care! A fan poll at goodbullhunting.com shows quite the opposite... I wonder if they had shown the maroon helmet with a white ATM the results would have been different. Honestly, I am stunned. Oh wait, they are just a little more than 17 - and we know what 17 year olds like...

A Skillet and a Dead Classic

[Helmets above from 1978]
What was branded as the Southwest Classic and played at a neutral site is now just a [cough] SEC [cough] conference matchup.

[Helmets above from late 70s]
The Iron Skillet will be fought over in Fort Worth. An outfitter came up with a pretty cool logo and shirt. Funny how when a football "Battle" is named after a skillet (instead of some military reference) it is far less offensive and quite charming!

And the ponies will be striped!
Indeed SMU will be throwing back to Pony Express - but not the 1982 SWC Champions who played in the 1983 Cotton Bowl... the team that went to the Sun Bowl and lost??? In fact not one single thing from that year (excluding the 1983 Cotton Bowl) made the "90 Greatest Moments in SMU Football History"... oh wait, they went to Japan.
Released uni shows the jersey has no stripes and the pants do! It even looks like the right shade of blue... let's see if Nike gets it right.

A Bucket and a Prayer

[Helmets above from 1978]
Up for keeps (for at least two years) - the Bayou Bucket! Houston and Rice don't play next year due to non-conference obligations. But the yearly gridiron rivalry is not expected to go too far away.

[Helmets above from 1991]
SMU would just like to break the streak. They haven't beat A&M since the Pony Express (in 1984).

SMU Blues
Looks like SMU will be back in blue on Oct 5th per this video. The video specifically references 1983, even though they have worn blue jerseys consistently up until 2009 when June Jones pretty much shelved them after a 1-11 year. So... the more unique Yale blue of the Pony Express era? I discuss the various shades, the absence of stripes on those early 80s jerseys, and a throwback possibility honoring Dickerson and the the 1983 Cotton Bowl team who were 1982 SWC Champions in my full blog with loads of photos. It will be good to see them in back in blue! One thing for sure - the consensus of the commentors on several boards is that SMU fans want the blue and want the separated stripes on the helmets and pants back.

Texas Tech Gray Duds...
...Pun intended! Hoped no gray helmet would ever hit the field. #Fugly The sweat soaked duds just prove why Red Raiders should wear black! I hate to admit however, that toward the end of the game as they became drenched in sweat and got darker, the gray duds did have a nice gun metal silver sheen to them that i did like. But, I still miss this!

TCU at Tech Tonight

[Helmets above from early 80s]
Should I mention that Horny Toads are just about extinct in West Texas??? TCU tweeted a 9-11 decal on a black helmet. Does this mean there is something special about the Tech Unis tonight? I think so - I guess they will pull the 9/12 banner at game time. They have revealed a memorial decal for Stiles - now, if we could just get that clean logo back on the side of the helmet! #LevelTheBevel

The Numbers Stay!!!

Texas football players voted by a 90% margin to keep the numbers on the helmets for the rest of the season honoring the 1963 team!

NO WHITEOUT FOR SMU
For four years in a row SMU has worn all white in the home opener which includes the fans for a whiteout. Tech was expected to wear black for a blackout. However, Nike didn't get SMU's white jerseys ready in time so SMU was forced to wear their red jerseys. No problem said SMU athletics - the red jerseys look great. Only problem is the fans were now dressed supporting the Red Raiders who wore all white and a new white helmet similar to the black version that was part of the uni reveal. Not too crazy about the all white look! The hash tag war (#WreckEmTech vs #WreckTech) goes to Tech with their WALK-ON FRESHMAN possibly star QB and new coach as they dominated the game after both teams started slow.

Next Up - Rice at A&M

[Helmets above from 1979-1981]
One change to the Aggie unis from last year is the under-layer which continues the shoulder stripes down the arm - but now in a fade pattern and with no number. Major downgrade. The uni now looks better without the underlayer. To make matters worse Johnny Football is wearing a terrible zubaz type Adidas arm sleeve, hope that goes away soon. Other changes for A&M include addition of Gig'em inside the collar, carried the Texas outline logo up to above the nameplate replacing the aTm logo. They will also be wearing a memorial decal for Polo.
I believe there are no changes for Rice.

Super SWC Start
First weekend of college football and we have TWO SWC games! First up is Tech and SMU.

[Helmets above from mid 80s]
I am guessing Tech will be wearing all black since it is "Blackout" and SMU will be wearing all white since it is "whiteout" for them. Apparently, SMU has been counting the days... and is pretty hyped up. It's a sellout, kids! First pre-game sellout at Ford Stadium. Gonna be an exciting game - kicking myself for not seeing this would be a perfect overnight stop on my road trip. Wait... what? Tech owns "#WreckemTech" not "#WreckTech"

Unis are actually IN the wash...
Since I am behind getting to all the massive amounts of uni tweaks, I will start with Tech and SMU. And will update the rest tonight while watching the game!
First of all, let's hope most of these Tech helmets never hit the field! This ugly thing was rumored earlier in the year... bleh! But hopefully it's absence at the uni unveiling is a good sign!
Tech Unveil Video
Most notable is the lack of a red jersey or pants - so less options than last year. Now we are the RED RAIDERS, but we have worn lots of black decades before black was supposedly cool, so... But I am not sure if I like how this one will play out... I have been working on a uni tracker (of the mix-and-match era) for Texas Tech complete with coach and records - hope to turn it into a supreme infographic. It started to include other SWC unis for the Tech games and has the potential to grow - but it is a different project from my official SWC uni tracker (that one only goes up to 1995). It is worth noting that most game photos of Kliff Kingsbury have him in all white or all black. Maybe a nod to Coach Leach... or his playing days?
SMU, surprisingly in this day of a new uni for every game has no announced uni changes. We will see tonight.

A King in Lubbock
Great interview with Kingsbury.
Interesting behind the scenes article about utilizing a Kingsbury makeover to recreate Tech's image!

* Denotes a Bowl Game

In the Wash
Arkansas
Minor tweaks for the hogs and one horrific development. Solid color numbers are back - dropping the white-to-black fade which was outlawed by the NCAA. Unfortunately, the fade landed on the helmet. Let's hope that gets outlawed next year! The helmet also seems to be a much darker red - maybe due to the matte finish? The white helmet worn twice in 2012 now has a shiny solid hog (not a red outline). There are some additional minor items discussed in this article.

Baylor
Not much good to report here... except there are STILL actually gold pants in the rotation that might get worn! And the stripes on the pants at least have some resemblance of the old Baylor Line. Hell, they even looked good as recently as 2008! Baylor in all white - still stupid. As the Oregon of the Big XII, can't miss out on a chrome helmet... God save the Queen. I really can't believe everyone likes it - even the old schoolers. Favorite quote from that video: "I mean, that's gorgeous. It's gold and shiny"... exactly. Wait - better quote: "It looks like winning." Sigh... And let's not leave out the flat black... God help us! They actually try to tie the black in the unis to the black bear mascot in this video... nice try. Another example of Nike bending the facts to sell their stupid ideas. Personally, I am looking forward to the 1950 throwbacks on tap for the last game at Floyd Casey. I am so glad that stadium is going away - haven't been there in over a decade when Tech was SUPPOSED to win and we got slaughtered. It was awful - will be nice to go to games in Waco again.

Houston
Coogs got a uni overhaul with lots of contrasting panels and gasp, multiple helmets. And then there is this... Lots to not like here... two new silly helmets. I have to laugh... for everyone saying Texas unis are boring, the whole nation is copying them in all whites! Although - as much as I want to level the bevel, the white helmet is solid. I like the addition of a gray outline on the numbers. Partial stripes on the pants look much better than the crappy piping filler of last year - and add somemore gray. Those stripes can be seen better at the end of this video.

Rice
I believe there are no changes for Rice.

SMU
Big news for SMU - back by popular demand..... drum roll... the Yale blue jerseys! For one game (honoring the 1983 team). See the middle column about why that is so odd. My guess is they had to get a blue jersey to make the fans happy and just said "since it's 2013, let's honor the 1983 squad and make it a big 80s night thing! Oh, and they had stripes on their pants - even better! because the fans love those too."
Released uni shows the jersey has no stripes and the pants do! It even looks like the right shade of blue... let's see if Nike gets it right.

Texas
The very year after Darrel Royal enters the pearly gates, Texas adds a Bevo on the jersey. Jicky - it just isn't needed. DKR would have never let this happen... Billed as "A few new twists to a classic look" - wonder if this waiting in the wings until DKR died. One of the new twists - a raised nose bumper. The worst development - it's not the right color! A "brighter shade of orange" isn't a good thing... at all.

Texas A&M
One change to the Aggie unis from last year is the under-layer which continues the shoulder stripes down the arm - but now in a fade pattern and with no number. Major downgrade. The uni now looks better without the underlayer. To make matters worse Johnny Football is wearing a terrible zubaz type Adidas arm sleeve, hope that goes away soon. Other changes for A&M include addition of Gig'em inside the collar, carried the Texas outline logo up to above the nameplate replacing the aTm logo. They will also be wearing a memorial decal for Polo.

TCU
Well, as you can only imagine being under the control of a Nike hand that TCU will have a wealth of sillyness on display. Black continues to be a prime player unfortunately - along with ridiculous red accents... I have never ever feared a frog in my life. As we saw in TCU's opener, blood (spitting blood is a purely defensive mechanism when you have no game) is still a popular theme with Nike. The helmet attempts to show blood squirting out the eyes... big fail since it's pointing backwards. I guess the froggy is RUNNING AWAY! I love the last two graphs in this teaser article for the opening game unis!

Texas Tech
First of all, let's hope most of these Tech helmets never hit the field! This ugly thing was rumored earlier in the year... bleh! But hopefully it's absence at the uni unveiling is a good sign! (Tech Unveil Video)
Most notable is the lack of a red jersey or pants - so less options than last year. Now we are the RED RAIDERS, but we have worn lots of black decades before black was supposedly cool, so...
