20 Year Look Back
It has been 20 years since the last official Southwest Conference games have been played. While the SWC ended in 1996, the last year for football was 1995. Throughout the football season I will look back at those last official games.

Arkansas @ SMU
9/2/95
SMU won 17-14 in a thriller that went down to the final minute. Arkansas had one more chance and drove the ball down to the one yard line on a six minute drive. With 56 seconds left, Arkansas fumbled the snap trying to get it in the endzone and SMU recovered. That was the only win the ponies got in 1995 and Arkansas went on to win its SEC division title and its first winning season of the 90s. Check the 5:10 mark of this video for game highlights. Here is the original NCAA Official Scoring Summary (an amazing handwritten 13 sheets of paper - old school, baby)! Note: Arkansas had already fled to the SEC (because of basketball - SEC was about basketball back then) - technically I probably should not include this game.

Texas @ SMU
9/30/95
Apparently a yawner per some of the reviews. One of those articles from the UT paper says SMU didn't belong in the game - this the week afer they beat Arkansas and Texas got whipped by Notre Dame. Although Arkansas sucked back then (why the fled to the SEC for basketball). Texas ran up a season high 558 yards (341 on the ground mostly on the back of Shon Mitchell (his first game over 100 yards - 185 to be exact) with a hobbled Ricky Williams only carrying 9 times for 48). Game video with Celebrating SWC intro here. Complete stats here.

Houston @ TCU
10/7/95
TCU beat an undefeated Houston (4-0) 31-21 in Fort Worth. The defense was able to shut out the Coogs in the first half. Andre Davis set a school record with the 14th 100-yd rushing game of his career while Knake established a TCU record of 45, topping the legendary Sammy Baugh's 44. It was the largest crowd to watch a TCU/Houston game at Amon Carter at the time (34,684). Game summary here.

Rice @ Texas
10/7/95
Horns scored on their first three posessions but stalled in the 2nd quarter. Rice racked up 253 yards and were tied 13-13 at the half. The Horns had a strong second half capped off by two 4th quarter touchdowns by the still injured Ricky Williams - making it 24 unanswered points. Texas wins in Austin 37-13. Daily Texan article - game summary in the second article on that page.

A&M @ Texas Tech
10/7/95
Simply one of the biggest games of the year! Tied up 7-7 at the half, the remaining two quarters of the game was a defensive struggle... until the last Aggie possession. This was the infamous Zach Thomas INT game winning touchdown with 30 seconds left! An unranked Tech beat #8 Texas A&M 14-7. Spike Dykes' first win over a top 10 team and first win over a top ranked team in 17 years. The phrase "Wreck 'em Tech" may not have stemmed from this game - but it was surely born here! Game stats here.

Baylor @ Houston
10/14/95
A whipping... 49-7. Baylor gained 591 yards against the Coogs in the Astrodome! It was the first 500 plus yard game for Baylor since SMU in 1984. Baylor held Houston to 178 yards (compared to 401 in the previous game against TCU) and chased Chuck Clements out of the pocket all night. Baylor Lariat article.

SMU @ Texas A&M
10/14/95
SMU led most of the game and was leading 17-13 with 56 seconds left to play. The Aggies, without Leeland McElroy, drove it 70 yards in five plays and scored with only eight seconds left to avoid the upset and secure a 20-17 victory at Kyle Field.

TCU @ Rice
10/14/95
Rice led 14-10 at half time. But TCU rallied - catching up in the 3rd quarter and taking over in the 4th to win 33-28. Game summary here.

Rice @ Texas Tech
10/21/95
Owls fell behind early but launched a furious 18 unanswered points rally sparked by Chad Nelson replacing an injured Josh LaRocca in the waning minutes of 3rd quarter. At 24-18, the Owls defense could not stop Zebbie Letheridge and Byron Hanspard. Rice had a couple more chances: one due to a dropped snap on a Tech punt resulting in the offense set up in Red Raider territory which produced no points and a drive ending in an interception. Rice was able to score again and get a safety but came up short in the 31-26 loss at Jones Stadium. Scoring Summary here and Rice Thresher article.

SMU @ Houston
10/21/95
The week after nearly knocking off Texas A&M, SMU loses 38-15 to Houston who hadn't won a game since last year when they played SMU. But that game was closer than it looked with Houston scoring three touchdowns in three minutes. A 78 yard pick-6 by James Reddish cut he rally short.

Texas A&M @ Baylor
10/21/95
In an effort to "Color the Town" when the Aggies arrive, students encouraged anyone with a collie to dress their dog in Baylor colors! No idea how that worked out... On to the game! Baylor was hopeful, especially since the Aggies barely got by SMU AND had lost to Tech which Baylor had already beat. After a strong start by Baylor in hopes of getting their first win in 10 years against the Ags, the Aggies blocked a punt and quickly scored. Baylor tried to play catch up for the rest of the game and fell 24-9 at Floyd Casey. Baylor Lariat articles: post-game and pre-game. Another article about the history here.

Houston @ Texas A&M
10/28/95
Despite numerous turnovers by the Coogs, they were able to stay in the game until the end of the 3rd quarter. With 4:23 left in the 3rd quarter, Aggie Keith Mitchell chased Clements into his own endzone resulting in a hurried throw and a pick-6 for Andre Williams. TBD - more to come. Aggies won 31-7maintaining the lo ngest home winning streak in the nation. LA Times SWC Roundup for the week.

Rice @ SMU
10/28/95
Rice broke a six game winless streak by beating SMU 34-24. But it was not without drama. Rice allowed SMU to score two touchdowns to get back in the game and then a turnover allowed SMU to take the lead midway through the 4th quarter. With 8:47 to play, Rice scored and the defense was able to hold on to seal their 7th staight victory over SMU. Rice Thresher articles: pre-game and post game.

TCU @ Baylor
10/28/95
Baylor won 27-24 in Waco. TCU CB Godrey White got his hands on two field goals and a PAT. The TCU defense did a good job of holding Baylor after turnovers. But two big misses for TCU prevented them from a comeback win - touchdown pass in endzone was intercepted by Robinson and an outstanding pass/catch/run was called back for illegal motion. Despite some good efforts by TCU, Baylor controlled the game. Baylor Lariat artcile here.Game summary here.

SMU @ TCU
11/4/95
A cold rainy homecoming in Fort Worth did not dissappoint! SMU jumped out to a 10-0 start , but were dominated in the 2nd quarter after that. But SMU pulled back to 17-16 on a one yard touchdown run. SMU attempted a two point conversion for the win late in the 4th quarter - but Rick LaFavers intercepts and returns it 100 yards adding the two points to TCU's score instead for a 19-16 TCU win. TCU will have two consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 1959. Instead of a win, SMU clinches the longest consecutive loss streak (for major colleges) at eight - and winless in their last 18 SWC games. TCU Game Summary here. LA Times Southwest Roundup.

Texas Tech @ Texas
11/4/95
A promising Top 25 matchup ended up in a 48-7 rout by No.13 Texas over No.23 Texas Tech in Austin. I was at this game - I remember telling dad and begging the powers that be to "make it stop..." It was supposed to be such a good game with promise and a chance for Tech! Despite struggling against Tech's defensive pressure the previous two years, Texas scored on four of its first seven posessions and led 28-0 at halftime with 304 yards. Three of those scores took less than two minutes. And it only got worse for the Tech fans. 48-0 at the end of the 3rd quarter. We had great seats, first row in the upper deck on the 50 yard line. I was mis-er-a-ble! The 41 point margin was the largest over a Top 25 team in Texas football history. Zebbie Lethridge saw his SWC record string of passes without an interception end at 211 when he was picked off in the 1st quarter. Texas went on to score a touchdown shortly thereafter, pushing Tech behind 14-0. This was also the game that I thought Tony Brackens had killed my kicker on the fake field goal early in the 2nd quarter when we were down 14-0 and trying to make something happen. Tech had more chances in the 2nd quarter to get back in the game but came up empty. Texas ended up scoring 28 points off four Tech turnovers. Daily Texan articles and game summary. Well, THAT was fun!
A perfect SWC ending to the season. Crazy from the start - horns jump out to a 17-0 lead. Sidelines clear after a sideline throwdown. No 1st quarter touchdown for Baylor (first time since 2013). 20-0 at halftime. Went outside to supervise some tree trimming and Baylor caught up 20-17. A little bit of nailbiting at the end - but Baylor's emergency backup backup backup backup? QB does not get to come out of it a hero. What a great game!

Last SWC 2015 Matchup

[Helmet matchup from 1957]
Baylor is basically playing for the Sugar Bowl - and Texas, well they are playing spoiler for a FIVE win season to avoid their first 8 loss season since 1956! They have a 7.8% chance...

A Sleeper in Fort Worth
What had promised to be a shootout, was a total yawner until OT. And with all that rain, the final game winning touchdown in double OT was a pass! In fact, two of the three OT touchdowns were passes. Baylor had 17 straight drives without scoring. Baylor went three straight quarters without scoring. In the end, TCU held Baylor on their last OT posession to seal the win and crush Baylor's Big XII title hopes.

Revivalry

[Helmet matchup from 1972]
If you think the Heisman House residents have problems with rivalry, see if you can annunciate REVIVALRY properly. A lot on the line at this game!

Wow - what a game!

What an incredible game! Good Southwest Conference football. Well, winsipedia, clear those streaks! And how about those unis - pure beauty with Tech matching up to the classic Longhorns with the 1993 throwbacks! I enjoyed every second of that game, even the few that Texas led... But man, what a finish! I felt pretty good once we got back up by two scores - but not comfortable. And that fake kneel down stolen from the A&M-Auburn game earlier in the year - but Jakeem's beast mode got us more than just a first down (the #2 #SCtop10 play of the day - #1 was his crazy tip catch touchdown early in the game)! Oh but wow, all the time left on the clock, and Texas comes back and scores again with their breakout freshman (his first career start, by the way). And then we are leading by only three. What I was most thankful for on this Thanksgiving was on 4th and 7 when Tech had only stopped that freshman once or twice, Texas called a long ball... that fell to the turf! Unbelievable! To secure the win and allow us to run out the clock, Mahomes trucked a Longhorn LB for a first down. Hey @Qriggs, can my QB flex now? ICYMI his first start was against Texas and he was promptly knocked out of the game by Quandre Diggs. Early in the game Mahomes flexed after scoring a touchdown. Diggs tweeted that same chump better stop flexing. Mahomes had some fun with the Texas alum too!

Thanksgiving Texas State Rivalry

[Helmet matchup from 1961]
Whew - that was a long gap without any SWC matchups! We are blessed this year with the Texas Tech - Texas matchup on Thanksgiving! The way it should be since the Aggies left us and no longer play Texas (at east for now). I hadn't realized we hadn't beat Texas since my dad died (that amazing Harrill- Crabtree last second game winner hookup in 2008). More importantly, I hadn't realized we hadn't beat Texas in Austin since Spike Dykes did in 1997!

Houston STILL Undefeated
What a hell of a comeback by Houston to remain undefeated at 10-0! Just wow!

Surprise Throwbacks!

For the love of God, why must the Longhorn Network exist? Because it does, most of us missed these beauties in action - oh and well, Texas and A&M no longer play each other. Stupid Longhorn Network. Stupid Longhorn Network. Texas surprised us (well, at least me because I missed the press release on Wednesday) with 1969 throwbacks to honor Freddie Steinmark. Timing was due to the My All American movie coming out this week. There were all sorts of pre-game and on-field events honoring Steinmark too. The really cool thing about the uni (besides the complete beauty of the 1969 helmets with the 100 years of college football sticker) was the attention to detail. No names on the back of the jerseys, no TV numbers on the shoulders, no jicky longhorn on the front, no block TEXAS. BLACK SHOES with white shoelaces and LOOK AT THOSE SOCKS! Such a great way to invoke a feel of the past amidst all the modern uni differences. Well played, Texas... well played! Even Coach got in on the fun with an old school looking sweatshirt! There are even fans of keeping the look (although, TV numbers are actually for game callers in the pressbox - who actually, are further and further away with the expansion of stadiums).

Death of a Garden Gnome

The UT Equipment guys have a travelling garden gnome they will tweet photos of sitting on other team's fields. Just for the record, TCU has one too (but not a gnome). Well, he broke Friday night. He was even given a proper burial. To top off the twitter fun, the UT equipment guys posted a photo of a gnome helmet memorial sticker. And yes, they fooled a few people! Not to worry gnome fans... meet Gnome II!

Seriously, though...
There THREE SWC teams still undefeated midway through the season! TCU, Baylor, and Houston!

Aw Crap... RIP BEVO XIV

Diagnosed with bovine leukemia last week, missing the Texas OU game, retired this week, and now in heaven with Dad. Major bummer to my Friday - the death a cow should really not make me cry... There have been some ugly, mean beasts wearing the BEVO halter. But I remember when I first saw XIV I knew he was perfect. His coloring was absolutely perfect. As we came to find out, he had a great, endearing personality too. Big loss and another hole in my heart. They did get some photos with him at the ranch with the Texas OU trophy. Official press release.

Give 'em Hell, Give 'em Hell
OU sucks!

Unranked Longhorns are now 6-2 when facing a ranked OU... that was simply bea-u-ti-ful! A fast start gave the kids the confidence they needed and the Horns NEVER looked back! Led the whole way, executed perfectly! But was not without a bit of stress there at the end. I watched some of Sooner GameDay Final show which was filmed while at Fair park and was stunned how professional and fair these guys were. They called it like it happened, and gave credit where credit was due. It was a fun watch! Hook'em!

And OU still sux!
Unranked Longhorns are 5-2 when facing a ranked OU... is it possible this year???

What time is it?

Thursday Treat

[Helmet matchup from 1973-75]
Only one SWC matchup this week - and it is on Thursday, so pay attention and don't miss it! After that, we have a long drought until Thanksgiving. U of H has taped SMU jerseys on their floors so the team can walk all over SMU. Fun, but kind of weak since they could only come up with fake black jerseys. Dallas reporters are pretty offended... Sounds like a pretty heated rivalry based on some old wounds! Wow, Houston ran up the score 95-21 the year after the death penalty ended. The win-loss history between the two favors U of H, but mostly due to the recent years of Houston being better and SMU grasping at straws. Before 2006, it was pretty even. I think this might be a good game if SMU does not make any early mistakes.

Well, that sucked...
One thing for sure about the Southwest Conference - you had your occassional drubbings! Will be curious if the new red uni elements for Texas Tech stay in the rotation with those two losses. For details to the return of the RED Raiders - see "In the Wash" in the right column. I continue to make updates to that feature when new uni elements drop.

Two More On Tap Today!

[Helmet matchup covers 1980s]
History has this one supremely lopsided in favor of the Horns. However, playing in Fort Worth with the issues Texas is having this year, I am not sure Texas can pull it off. Strong was told the line before the game and he responded, "Oh, I didn't realize it was that much".

[Helmet matchup covers 1971]
All even at 36-36-1 prompted a new trophy for the Texas Shootout! I am assuming the other side of the football has a double T??? All Texas Tech since official SWC play ended except the last four years in a row for Baylor.

SWC Overload
Honestly, last weekend was so intense, I was not even capable of talking about those SWC games until now - and I still may not have recovered from them... What a true SWC matchup between Tech and TCU in a place that is known for upsetting Top 5 teams. Knowing Tech was in trouble with TCU threatening it was brutal watching the end of that game. When the ball tipped out of Doctson's hands, I knew we had won and started screaming... only to have the victorious moment shattered a mere second later with that tipped ball falling into Aaron Green's hands. Hands to head, screaming Noooooooooooo! I do not think I have reacted so personally to a game in a good long while. The only two that pop into my mind that I can compare it to had more positive endings - the Texas Natioanl Championship game in 2005 and the Tech upset of Texas in 2008. This matchup really paid some serious tribute to the old Southwest Conference! But I still say, TCU wears women's tights!

After that heart stopper, we were treated to a hell of an ending to the Southwest Classic where the Aggies beat Arkansas in overtime.

The Baylor Rice game got out of hand quicker than expected - but boy, what a good looking game!

THREE SWC Matchups this Weekend!

[Helmet matchup from 1967]
Should be a good one in Lubbock! Tech has a good rep of upsetting Top 5 teams at home lately (whether ranked or not). Last weekend we played a team that slaughtered us the year before and we won. Well, TCU beat us 82-27 last year...

[Helmet matchup from 1979]
I just really can't see how this game goes well for Arkansas. Arkansas has the overwhelming overall record (Arkansas was pretty good when it was in the SWC). But in the Sumlin era A&M is 3-0 and by far the better SEC team. If the Aggies pull it off in DFW, it wil be the first 4-0 class in 80 years against the Razorbacks.

[Helmet matchup from 1966]
Not as lopsided as you might think over the years. Baylor kind of sucked in the SWC until Grant Teaff. Since the end of the SWC, Baylor and Rice have only met 3 times resulting in Briles wins. Rice went through a tough stretch and is a much better team now - but this game is at that new stadium in Waco.
Sorry, Owls.

Some good tidbits in this TSHoF article!

What a SWC Weekend That Was!
Wow, wow, wow! Epic win for Tech in Fayetteville (SEC who?) or maybe epic meltdown for Arkansas... No - epic win for Tech for sure, they played just awesome. With the exception of the one INT (which was a freshman goof "throw it up" - Arkansas ain't some FCS patsy, well maybe they are this year) which we got one right back, I think we scored on every posession but one. Ah, that missed field goal - which we just should have really gone for it - what the hell was that call anyway? I don't think we ever punted. Beautiful game and wow, bea-u-ti-ful throwbacks (especially when the compression sleeve stripes were worn)! Lots of talk about the throwbacks being mid 90s or from 1990 which was the last time the Red Raiders were in Fayetteville 25 years ago. But they are from 1993-94. One year earlier they would have had stripes on the helmet. On year later they would have no stripes on the pants.

And #PonyTempoUp, SMU!!! The final score was in no way representative of SMU's play in that game with that talent at QB. The team's moxie and confidence instilled by Chad Morris is impressive. And the guy is some kind of wizard! Happy to have a competitive SMU back! And some solid unis they are rocking this year - assumably can credit Chad Morris with bringing the stripes back on the white pants. Solid move. Only way to improve on that look - striped socks (can't win them all).

One Down, Two to GO?

Found this beauty at RedRaiders.com. Scott Hall did an honorary Dirk West cartoon for 2015. Well done.

Guns Up Helmet?

Found in a video is a Guns Up helmet on Kliff's desk. Hard to make out at first, but it is a smoking gun. When @TTU_Equipment was asked about, they said "you never know". That to me is a yes, kids! Sure will beat the hell out of that hombres crap one-offs we have been wearing!

TCU has the Skillet

[Helmet matchup from 1966]
Let's look at that statistics site again. If you disregard post SWC, these teams are pretty evenly matched. And really are anyway - one big red chunk for SMU in the 80s and one big purple chunk for TCU of late, it all averages out. I am more surprised about the red blips in that field of purple. Can SMU pry the Iron Skillet from TCU's hands?

Tech is Arkansas's Bitch?

[Helmet matchup covers 1984-92]
When I saw the overall record between Tech and Arkansas, I was surprised and did not really understand how it was possible. I have no recollection of being Arkansas's bitch my whole life. Cool graphics at this site show win/losses with magnitude of score differential and also has yearly winning percentages graphed out below. Only the second time the two have played since 1991, I guess I haven't really missed Arkansas afterall! Maybe we can get another black bar on that chart this weekend - too bad we are not playing at The Rock!

No 1965 Repeat
Was kind of hoping Rice might pull off a win - with it being fifty years since that upset in Austin, a Froggy Williams decal, and the fact I turned 50 this year... For the record Rice stuck in there and made a worthy effort at a comeback after the Texas fast start.
Here is the Kern Tips game highlights video from that game - with some added film of the midfield post game celebration by Rice. The article about Jess Neely's last road win includes a note that KTRK broadcast the GAME film the following day!
With the new white matte helmet, Rice is the latest school to go full on stormtrooper. Oddly enough, the last time they wore a white helmet was in 1976 - which coincidentally is the one below!

Why does Rice play Texas?

[Helmet matchup from 1976]
Those are famous words from JFK. They tied that week. Classic rivalry this Saturday on the 53rd anniversary of JFK's moon speech at Rice. Texas is 40-2 against Rice since 1965. The last time Rice got the upper hand was in 1994. But considering how Texas played last week and Rice's new found confidence, this could be a good one!

Some Uni Surprises
Stripes on SMU's white pants was the biggest and welcome surprise to me. Well, other than SMU giving them a fight for a while there! We are also seeing an influx of the Riddell SpeedFlex helmets which really break up the design aesthetics of helmets (even more than the weird shapes). It is just another glaring "look at me" in my eyes. And is it just me - or does the new College GameDay logo echo this shape, or what? I really hate it. It also has stupid Nike letters too. Here is another version that "sort of" includes a football... The old one was eons better!
Updates added to "In The Wash" down in the right column.

The Day is Here

[Helmet matchup from 1991]
Oddly enough, in 2012 when this SWC rivalry was reinstated SMU led this series 36-35-7. Prior to then the two had only played twice since the end of the SWC. Boy, timing is everything. In 2012 and 2014 Baylor pummeled ole Peruna and Baylor now holds the series lead. And I don't expect that to change any time soon... Not sure why they did not play in 2013. Here is a link from 2012 that lists the five best games in this rivalry.

COUNTDOWN
To 1st 2015 SWC Game

Ranked by Last Year's SWC Finish

Well Played!

As you can see in Baylor's 2015 team photo, #61 is followed by #58. The score Baylor beat TCU by. While Baylor assures us this was a coincidence, that tweet from Nielsen (lined up by height) has since been deleted. There is also an 11-2 (their record last year).

Well, that wasn't so bad...
Just a lot of stupid hype about a black "Ice" Halloween night game one-off. Score = Stupid

Oh God, what now?

Everyone is worried about the new A&M alternate. Adidas and @AggieFBlife has been leaving cryptic tweets the whole week. Most say something stupid like night speed, looking fresh, and various other speed mentions - ugh, uniforms cannot make you fast. Some have promising hints like Texas Royalty, Football Legend, Original 12th Man, Football VIP that make me hope for some kind of 1957 John David Crow or maybe even a Gill throwback. But the underlying theme is that stupid exploded diamond pattern Adidas pushes. Which by the way has no "elevation" in the College Station area! And then there were snowflake emojis - and now we have ice...??? I can tell you one thing - if that gawd awful beveled ATM shows up on a helmet, my head will explode like that ice!

Working a Little Too Hard
Apologies for my absence last year! Had a huge project at work that required significantly more time. I do have all my notes and will be recreating the 2014 page for the archive. Scheduled matchups are posted and I will be filling in all the uni updates shortly.

Arkansas
Sticking with darker 2015 unis with the "tusks" and keeping it simple with 2 jerseys, 2 pants, and 2 helmets. They did however change to white cleats this year. Which was a pretty big deal because the coach always preferred black. He made it clear shoes don’t make a difference, but acknowledged that it meant a lot to the players (who were stoked in the video).

Baylor
Oh brother, here we go... new gray with a silver chrome helmet. I don't actually hate this - if one of Baylor's colors was silver instead of gold. As for the base unis - there are so many, do we really care? The title of this article says it all. But, no new redesign since 2013 – just addition of elements. At least there are stripes on the pants – albeit, truncated.

Excellent (old) breakdown of Baylor unis in the Briles era and how the various mixes faired on the field. I am quite surprised by the last table in that link that shows the most worn mix is Gold-Green-Gold – and look at its record, 12-4! And most of those were pre 2012 when they were not winning as much! If you finish that table out to include all of 2014, it is the same because they did NOT wear Gold-Green-Gold that year. The Win-Loss breakdown:
2008 (4-8) = 5 games 3-2
2009 (4-8) = 3 games 2-1
2010 (7-6) = 2 games 1-1
2011 (10-3) = 4 games 4-0
2012 (8-5) = 1 game 1-0
2013 (11-2) = 1 game 1-0
2014 (11-2) = 0 games 0-0

Houston
No changes since last year's tweaks. Basic set of 2 pants, 2 jerseys, 2 helmets. I do still think there should be some blue in there though. The 2014 Andre Ware throwbacks were awesome! Oh, and of course they should dump that stupid 90s bevel logo!

Rice
No change this year. Clean and simple look with 2 jerseys, 2 pants, and 1 helmet. They could use some stripes on those pants though - or some gray pants. I have always favored the wide two color stripes on their pants.
UPDATE: A white helmet for the Texas game! Also wearing a decal for Froggy Williams.

SMU
No changes to the base unis since the 2014 return to old school (sort of). It's a good look with 3 jerseys, 2 pants, and the white helmet with stripes. Especially when they wear the blue jersey. I am partial to the gray pants too, since they have the wide stripes. Don't care much for their red chromed helmet. SMU should just ALWAYS have stripes on everything they do. I like the classic look of the jersey but really wish it had shoulder stripes.

Unfortuantely, there is another chromed helmet floating around that claims to be legit. I can't imagine that looking Good.
UPDATE: SMU's white pants had stripes in week 1 - a welcome addition!

Texas
It has been a rough preseason for Longhorns. After an initial scare Texas Strong says no jicky unis! Whew, good thing – I don’t like it when Darrell Royal rolls over… However, I am concerned this ugly thing may make more than one appearance. #StillRollingOver? One new detail stays unseen by our eyes. That is blessed upon the Longhorns due their changeover to Mach Speed. I am guessing Mach Speed will screw up the traditional Longhorn look in some way. Well, maybe not. At least except for that copper longhorn helmet decal… Base unis: it's white-white-white or white-orange-white. That's it! Got it? Perfect.

Texas A&M
Another scary preseason with all the Adidas hype left me saying, “Ugh, what now?” Mostly though, the Aggies stay the same with those sweet 70s throwbacks and two base helmets - white and matte maroon (neither with stripes). However, with Adidas there must be ice… which is about as ridiculous as this photo. Apparently ice is black now... Just ugh.

Have been wondering if we would have anything to mark John David Crow's passing - this 44 memorial decal with the Heisman shape was finally released 9/4. Although, I personally think it is too small.
UPDATE: The helmet for the black unis being worn on Halloween night (now day) have a decal that reflects when a camera flash hits it. Sorry, but I must laugh how the uiform provider laid all their bets on the scheduled night game - and tv drove it to be a day game.

TCU
There is the new Mach Speed base set - it has some kind of reptilian pattern on various elements (including the purple helmet and the purple stripe on the white helmet). You will be able to tell the white in this set by the big nike collar being truncated and not finishing off in a point. I did not even realize (on tv) the whites they wore for their opener had that purple reptilian accents on the helmets. Not sure if this is their complete base set or they will pull from everything else they have (which they have over the years).

One thing I noticed looking over photos from last year is they would acheive a different look by not including or including the stripe on their base helmets. They claim the new unis are the first sublimated football uni... They are just brutal. I can only hope we will see little of them and they stick with what they have been wearing for most games. You can see the mix-match with and without helmet stripes (plus the purple chrome and purple matte helmets here).
UPDATE: TCU also has a gray Mach helmet that flew under the radar during the original reveal.

Texas Tech
Usually UA tends to lean heavily on some pre-season hype - but nothing at all for Tech. Crickets. With that I will assume the base uni (2 jerseys, 2 pants, black and white helmets - no red at all for the Red Raiders) stays the same. Of course, it is Under Armour - there will be plenty of fugly one-offs. Man they sure were brutal last year. The highlight of the year (if there will be any at all) is if they wear those throwback beauties again. So good to see the love for those from the young players! Just good, clean design - a dying art!
UPDATE: Memorial decal for Jennie Bailey.
MORE UPDATES:Tech came out for warmups in week 4 against TCU wearing all black. When they came out for the game they were wearing RED JERSEYS! To accent the jerseys, the helmets had new red chrome facemasks. The following week, Tech wore RED PANTS. It is reported that red will stay in the rotation - however, not sure with the losses in those two games.

10.29.09 - I just stumbled across your website... it's great!! -Eric

10.13.08 - Susan, I love your web-site, SWCFootball. -Jay B

09.03.08 - I had to chuckle whena I read that SMU is going back to their "roots" by sporting white helmets. If they truly wished to go back that far, they'd wear all red (leather or plastic). As a native San Antonian, I remember their uniforms from the Doak Walker-Kyle Rote-Pat Knight era: red helmets (no stripes), red jerseys (no stripes), white numerals, and gray pants. No blue at all to be seen. (For what it's worth, in the 1940s I watched many a high school game with Rote and Knight in the backfield for the Jefferson Mustangs.) Much to my father's annoyance, each football season I'd plaster the windows of the family car with those Humble Oil giveaway pennants in SWC team colors. As I recall they were placed on the outside of the windows and made for difficult removal (once the season was over, that chore was mine). Keep up the good work. -Warren Thompson, Lebanon PA

09.03.08 - BTW, Susan, that’s an amazing site on SWC you have. Good work. -Justin in AR (via Uni Watch)

07.04.08 - I love your SWC site. I've put up a season-ending wrap the last two years: the final SWC standings, using Jeff Sagarin's rankings. Hope you'll check it out. Go Owls! -John Cunyus
