Welcome to a trip back to the old Southwest Conference!
Most notably I include Arkansas, Baylor, Houston, Rice, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, and Texas Tech.
SWC football ended in 1995 after Arkansas fled to the SEC in 1990.

I started this website a long time ago - and have been running a virtual SWC for 15 years now.
Column on the left includes historical links to all things Southwest Conference - many of the links are pages researched and developed by me.
In the middle column is the running blog commentary for the current year.
The right column is the virtual standings, a uniform wrap-up for the current year, and links to the pages from other years.

20 Year Look Back
2015 marked 20 years since the last official Southwest Conference games had been played. While the SWC ended in 1996, the last year for football was 1995. Throughout the 2015 football season I looked back at those last official games. Leaving them here this year since 1996 was the official end of the SWC and I still need to load some of the games.

Arkansas @ SMU
9/2/95
SMU won 17-14 in a thriller that went down to the final minute. Arkansas had one more chance and drove the ball down to the one yard line on a six minute drive. With 56 seconds left, Arkansas fumbled the snap trying to get it in the endzone and SMU recovered. That was the only win the ponies got in 1995 and Arkansas went on to win its SEC division title and its first winning season of the 90s. Check the 5:10 mark of this video for game highlights. Here is the original NCAA Official Scoring Summary (an amazing handwritten 13 sheets of paper - old school, baby)! Note: Arkansas had already fled to the SEC (because of basketball - SEC was about basketball back then) - technically I probably should not include this game.

Texas @ SMU
9/30/95
Apparently a yawner per some of the reviews. One of those articles from the UT paper says SMU didn't belong in the game - this the week afer they beat Arkansas and Texas got whipped by Notre Dame. Although Arkansas sucked back then (why the fled to the SEC for basketball). Texas ran up a season high 558 yards (341 on the ground mostly on the back of Shon Mitchell (his first game over 100 yards - 185 to be exact) with a hobbled Ricky Williams only carrying 9 times for 48). Game video with Celebrating SWC intro here. Complete stats here.

Houston @ TCU
10/7/95
TCU beat an undefeated Houston (4-0) 31-21 in Fort Worth. The defense was able to shut out the Coogs in the first half. Andre Davis set a school record with the 14th 100-yd rushing game of his career while Knake established a TCU record of 45, topping the legendary Sammy Baugh's 44. It was the largest crowd to watch a TCU/Houston game at Amon Carter at the time (34,684). Game summary here.

Rice @ Texas
10/7/95
Horns scored on their first three posessions but stalled in the 2nd quarter. Rice racked up 253 yards and were tied 13-13 at the half. The Horns had a strong second half capped off by two 4th quarter touchdowns by the still injured Ricky Williams - making it 24 unanswered points. Texas wins in Austin 37-13. Daily Texan article - game summary in the second article on that page.

A&M @ Texas Tech
10/7/95
Simply one of the biggest games of the year! Tied up 7-7 at the half, the remaining two quarters of the game was a defensive struggle... until the last Aggie possession. This was the infamous Zach Thomas INT game winning touchdown with 30 seconds left! An unranked Tech beat #8 Texas A&M 14-7. Spike Dykes' first win over a top 10 team and first win over a top ranked team in 17 years. The phrase "Wreck 'em Tech" may not have stemmed from this game - but it was surely born here! Game stats here.

Baylor @ Houston
10/14/95
A whipping... 49-7. Baylor gained 591 yards against the Coogs in the Astrodome! It was the first 500 plus yard game for Baylor since SMU in 1984. Baylor held Houston to 178 yards (compared to 401 in the previous game against TCU) and chased Chuck Clements out of the pocket all night. Baylor Lariat article.

SMU @ Texas A&M
10/14/95
SMU led most of the game and was leading 17-13 with 56 seconds left to play. The Aggies, without Leeland McElroy, drove it 70 yards in five plays and scored with only eight seconds left to avoid the upset and secure a 20-17 victory at Kyle Field.

TCU @ Rice
10/14/95
Rice led 14-10 at half time. But TCU rallied - catching up in the 3rd quarter and taking over in the 4th to win 33-28. Game summary here.

Rice @ Texas Tech
10/21/95
Owls fell behind early but launched a furious 18 unanswered points rally sparked by Chad Nelson replacing an injured Josh LaRocca in the waning minutes of 3rd quarter. At 24-18, the Owls defense could not stop Zebbie Letheridge and Byron Hanspard. Rice had a couple more chances: one due to a dropped snap on a Tech punt resulting in the offense set up in Red Raider territory which produced no points and a drive ending in an interception. Rice was able to score again and get a safety but came up short in the 31-26 loss at Jones Stadium. Scoring Summary here and Rice Thresher article.

SMU @ Houston
10/21/95
The week after nearly knocking off Texas A&M, SMU loses 38-15 to Houston who hadn't won a game since last year when they played SMU. But that game was closer than it looked with Houston scoring three touchdowns in three minutes. A 78 yard pick-6 by James Reddish cut he rally short.

Texas A&M @ Baylor
10/21/95
In an effort to "Color the Town" when the Aggies arrive, students encouraged anyone with a collie to dress their dog in Baylor colors! No idea how that worked out... On to the game! Baylor was hopeful, especially since the Aggies barely got by SMU AND had lost to Tech which Baylor had already beat. After a strong start by Baylor in hopes of getting their first win in 10 years against the Ags, the Aggies blocked a punt and quickly scored. Baylor tried to play catch up for the rest of the game and fell 24-9 at Floyd Casey. Baylor Lariat articles: post-game and pre-game. Another article about the history here.

Houston @ Texas A&M
10/28/95
Despite numerous turnovers by the Coogs, they were able to stay in the game until the end of the 3rd quarter. With 4:23 left in the 3rd quarter, Aggie Keith Mitchell chased Clements into his own endzone resulting in a hurried throw and a pick-6 for Andre Williams. TBD - more to come. Aggies won 31-7maintaining the lo ngest home winning streak in the nation. LA Times SWC Roundup for the week.

Rice @ SMU
10/28/95
Rice broke a six game winless streak by beating SMU 34-24. But it was not without drama. Rice allowed SMU to score two touchdowns to get back in the game and then a turnover allowed SMU to take the lead midway through the 4th quarter. With 8:47 to play, Rice scored and the defense was able to hold on to seal their 7th staight victory over SMU. Rice Thresher articles: pre-game and post game.

TCU @ Baylor
10/28/95
Baylor won 27-24 in Waco. TCU CB Godrey White got his hands on two field goals and a PAT. The TCU defense did a good job of holding Baylor after turnovers. But two big misses for TCU prevented them from a comeback win - touchdown pass in endzone was intercepted by Robinson and an outstanding pass/catch/run was called back for illegal motion. Despite some good efforts by TCU, Baylor controlled the game. Baylor Lariat artcile here.Game summary here.

SMU @ TCU
11/4/95
A cold rainy homecoming in Fort Worth did not dissappoint! SMU jumped out to a 10-0 start , but were dominated in the 2nd quarter after that. But SMU pulled back to 17-16 on a one yard touchdown run. SMU attempted a two point conversion for the win late in the 4th quarter - but Rick LaFavers intercepts and returns it 100 yards adding the two points to TCU's score instead for a 19-16 TCU win. TCU will have two consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 1959. Instead of a win, SMU clinches the longest consecutive loss streak (for major colleges) at eight - and winless in their last 18 SWC games. TCU Game Summary here. LA Times Southwest Roundup.

Texas Tech @ Texas
11/4/95
A promising Top 25 matchup ended up in a 48-7 rout by No.13 Texas over No.23 Texas Tech in Austin. I was at this game - I remember telling dad and begging the powers that be to "make it stop..." It was supposed to be such a good game with promise and a chance for Tech! Despite struggling against Tech's defensive pressure the previous two years, Texas scored on four of its first seven posessions and led 28-0 at halftime with 304 yards. Three of those scores took less than two minutes. And it only got worse for the Tech fans. 48-0 at the end of the 3rd quarter. We had great seats, first row in the upper deck on the 50 yard line. I was mis-er-a-ble! The 41 point margin was the largest over a Top 25 team in Texas football history. Zebbie Lethridge saw his SWC record string of passes without an interception end at 211 when he was picked off in the 1st quarter. Texas went on to score a touchdown shortly thereafter, pushing Tech behind 14-0. This was also the game that I thought Tony Brackens had killed my kicker on the fake field goal early in the 2nd quarter when we were down 14-0 and trying to make something happen. Tech had more chances in the 2nd quarter to get back in the game but came up empty. Texas ended up scoring 28 points off four Tech turnovers. Daily Texan articles and game summary. I Learned the Chant
Yes, I learned the chant - Luka helped me. But a bad start and TCU never had a chance against Ugh-a and their middle aged QB. UGA spared nobody... Nothing taken away from the incredible season, incredible job new coach Sonny Dykes did, and the unwavering fight and heart in this kid Max Duggan! Great year, RIFF RAM!

I am Giving TCU the Cactus!
They earned it in the actual desert! When I saw TCU pull Michigan in the draw, I KNEW TCU could beat them. And TCU pretty much dominated the game but not without some nervous moments because well, the cardiac kids. Max continues to show the world he is an ABSOLUTE DAWG. Lots of cool and stats. And everyone getting in on frog fun! And all the talk about the B1G Michigan smashing and they couldn't even beat the Big12 runner up! Just for the record - my man Sonny continues to amaze me. I know Spike is beyond proud! For the record - CFP teams honoring Mike Leach went 2-0. Big W. Confetti. Kisses. Team. And I will learn RIFF RAM Bah Zoo Lickety Lickety Zoo Zoo Who Wah Wah Who Giv 'em Hell, TCU by the Championship Game!

Bowl Wrap-up
SWC teams did not fare well during Bowl Season and went 4-4. Texas A&M was the ONLY SWC school that did not go to a bowl game. Geez... There were so many good bowl games, I will be honest - I don't remember all of them. The Texas Tech win was pretty awesome with Ole Miss trying to come back and we kept after them and got an Onside Six. I was seriously starting to feel disrespected by Lane Kiffin going for it in places he shouldn't have. But it was indeed a great tribute to Mike Leach. He would have loved it. Both teams wore helmet stickers in the game (as did so many teams this bowl season). And of course, even though we all missed it with the Arkansas game in OT, the first play of the game was an Air Raid formation resulting in a declined delay of game penalty. It was a super intense and crazy game. And let's talk about the big, bad SEC flopping over and over in the game while getting run over by little ole Texas Tech. Guessing there wasn't any ice left over for their beverages after all the ice baths they needed after the game. Tech however, had plenty of ice for hot toddys... And with a win last year against another SEC team in a bowl, Tech is 4-0 against current and future SEC teams! Here is one more interesting tidbit regardning Mike Leach. SWORD SWUNG!

Give that big Son of a Bitch the Heisman!
Thanks, RaiderTy for that headline! Let's just give a minute to appreciate Max Duggan. Kansas State played 'em hard in the Big XII Championship game and TCU found themselves behind once again. I am not sure I ever seen more effort from a QB (not QB1 at the start of the seaon and just coming off major surgery when he stepped in, by the way) to tie the game in the waning minutes of the game. The kid was so gassed for amazing scramble plays that he could not breathe and was on all fours in the endzone. TCU came up short (supposedly...???) only because for some bizzarre reason whoever called the plays didn't give the ball to the Heisman candidate. Heartbreaker of a loss. But it didn't matter they still got in (everyone agrees). And Max is going to New York!

Double T Intact!
After a several hour delay to move the crane, the Double T scoreboard was removed in one piece! It was quite a show live and suspenseful as you could not see once it cleared the buildings and could only hear what sounded like celebratory cheers. The sped up video is scary - don't freak out. It was set down and reportedly hauled away on a flat bed to storage.

Double T Scoreboard
What a win in Lubbock against OU!!! First time Tech beat Texas and OU in the same year! Don't let the door hit you on the way out... Bittersweet though as the original Double T scoreboard that stood in the South Endzone since 1978 will now come down. The South Endzone renovations will put another Double T scoreboard up, but it is expected that on Friday when it comes down, it may not be salvageble due to the amount of concrete inside holding it together. In honor of that old scoreboard, I am workinh on a little project.

Dirk West inspired Cartoons
Meet Jay Leeson. He does great old school upcoming football game cartoons for the Lubbock Avalanche Journal. The TCU cartoon focused on the cactus feud! And general Texas Tech football related beauties too - including the Double T scoreboard. Not sure how long, just found him. Enjoy!

Circling Back to A&M
Can we just talk about what is happening in College Station? A fundamental principle of Texas A&M is you DO NOT LEAVE the game early. That will give you the monniker of Two Percenter. Absolutely unheard of to leave the game early. Now, I know it was cold and it was the SEC signature non-conference cream puff game (UMass at 1-9). But.... how bad has it gotten at Kyle Field? The entire stadium emptied out after the Aggie Band played at half time. Gobsmacked! And here is ole Jimbo saying he didn't even notice and he doesn't care because they will be here next week for LSU. What a f*cking travesty. And then they go out and beat #5 LSU... just proof they are entitled, not committed, and it is a total dumpster fire under Jimbo. Storm the field and then don't go to a bowl game - fitting.

Week 13 - Final SWC Matchup
Pretty much everything that happened after this game made me forget about what happened in this game... Home team wins again. Here is what this game should have looked like! Or the 1971 version which actually aligns more with what Baylor wears today... odd.

The Revivalry
So, the big revenge, right? TCU crushed Baylor's playoff chances last year - so it is only fair we flip the script, right? Perfect Big 12 scenario - perfect Southwest Conference scenario. And that mostly happened... ALMOST! Wow, wow, wow, what a game! All TCU had to do was make a well practiced 2 point conversion. Well, someone had a much more exciting idea - and quite frankly, it was best they did not make the conversion. Because all they needed was to hold Baylor, get the ball back, and then kick a field goal. And all went well until the kick. Dykes decided to run the ball two times to get in the middle of the field and planned on using the well-practiced "Bazooka" play. So here we are and now there only 18 seconds on the clock and zero timeouts left. It looked like absolute chaos. I could barely get up from my chair and get closer to the tv in the same amount of time that TCU got the special teams on the field, the offense off, lined up, hiked the football, kick holder set the football, and Kell kicked it through the uprights. Un-fucking-believable! And of course we all heard from Sonny, they practice this every week. So much for 61-58... I learned a new hastag this weekend... #SuckstoBU. The cardiac kids are 11-0! The hypno toad is real - even though a horny toad is not a frog or toad, it is a lizard.

Three Left
Week 11 brings TCU at Texas. TCU is trying to stay undefeated behind the power of the Hypno Frog but being ranked #4 in the country, Texas still is favored at home only being ranked 18. And College Gameday is headed back to Austin... weird, right? I am assuming another close one that TCU pulls out in the 4th quarter - and as Texas is famous lately for losing games late. Instead we are treated to a first half of mostly no scoring - while I am trying to watch Tech against Kansas at the same time. Which I might add that when I saw KU come out in Trajan Font helmets, I KNEW we would win. Jayhwak>Trajan... Always! But I digress... and for good reason I guess, Texas underperformed (even with the excitement of that late scoop and score which had the fans heading BACK to their seats. And TCU is 10-0. They have a point... Props to Sonny Dykes! But OHYMYGOD, I just saw for the first time what they did with the BEVO architectural element in the new South endzone. That is wicked - and the aerial is even better!

Week 10
Week 10 brings us two SWC matchups. First up is the Battle for the Saddle. For months there has been an on-going fued between TCU and Texas Tech based on a TCU recruiter's tweet saying no one would want to come to the desert of Lubbock. Thousands of cactuses sent to said TCU recruiter, a BRAND movement with Joey McGuire front and center, and a viral twitter habit of putting a cactus next to your name later - we find ourselves here. Turns out NIL $$$ do not necessarily make a good team! Tech played really great for three quarters, looked AM-A-ZING, and WON halftime with a well-played formation. But to effectively come out on top of the brand war, you gotta win... damnit. TCU keeps the saddle.

Next up is SMU and Houston. With SMUs horrid black and blue unis (with not a speck of red) I just assumed they would end up black and blue. Boy, was I wrong - highest scoring game in the history of football. And SMU absolutely dominated. Houston tried to come back and score a bunch at the end, but SMU was beyond victorius as they jumped on the #WreckDana bandwagon.

Even More Tech Throwbacks!
Holy crap! Another new set of throwbacks revealed for the TCU game. Red pants! In a tribute to the Billy Joe Tolliver era in the mid to late 80s because he was undefeated against TCU. Even made the Gear Up segment!

Week 9
Finally back into SWC action with Tech and Baylor. Some fantastic throwbacks for Tech. Just make them primary already. Baylor won in Lubbock for the first time since the 90s... So I guess Tech loses to Baylor and will go on to beat undefeated TCU.

More Tech Throwbacks!
Another first with Black - Black - Black throwbacks for the Baylor game. All black with helmet stripes was first worn at the Coca Cola Classic game in Tokyo in 1988. But I know they were worn into at least 1990 because Rodney Blackshear and Jamie Gill wore them. So far with my research I have found photographic evidence of 1991 vs Texas A&M. And oh, get this - Rodney just replied to my tweet. So there you go!

Texas - OU
Big expectations with yummy superlatives. Made me nervous, especially with the beat down TCU handed Zero U the week before. Dallas all lit up. Texas got out to a fast start and it continued. 1984 was the last time Texas shut out Zero U in the first half. Just to be clear - there IS crying in football. 28-0 at the half and #OU still Sucks! It only got worse. Were they looking ahead to Kansas? The big question was who would score first - the Rays, Guardians, or OU? It was the Guardians who scored to end the marathon extra innings game, by the way. How many points did Zero U score? Louisiana Monroe scored more points on Texas than Oklahoma. Crimson side emptied out pretty early - I bet the corn dog line was a long one! They ARE known for leaving early... But Texas fans did not lose complete sight of reality... Wow! #RedRiverShutout Really cool game summary.

And OU Still Sucks!

What time is it?

Tech Throwbacks
A timeless classic. At least the athletic department gets it... First time for a Black - White - Black throwback with helmet stripes (have worn B-W-B with stripeless helmets in 2015 throwbacks). Worn from 1981 to 1983 based on where I am on my complete Tech uni history research. And as always #LevelTheBevel and go back to the #FlatDoubleT!

Monster SWC Weekend
FOUR, I repeat, FOUR SWC Matchups this week! And no lightweights!

The #IronSkillet feuding of the two DFW teams started well before game time. But this one has an extra special bitterness to it this year with Sonny Dykes leaving SMU for TCU. But it did no good... Sonny is a world class coach.

Texas players seemed to be a little worried about their safety in Lubbock during the #BattleForTheSpurs. Comments to that post are priceless because it seems they do not understand the dynamics of tortilla flight! Nor do they undersatnd the quality of store bought tortillas... And as someone else said: cattle is just more comfortbale in fences! What a game though - another OT win! Incredible game - second time this year we found we "lost" and found a way to come back and win. Storm the field! Only the second time the Red Raiders have come back from 10+ down at the half to win a Big 12 game. Had a good feeling win the Game Day guys picked Texas across the board - "So you say there is a chance"... I think Texas fans are lying on numerous accounts. Texas just can't finish. Another SEC send-off. This post is sponsored by Joey's Wrecker Service. Everything runs through Lubbock!

#BayouBucket had Rice starting off strong - and I really thoiught they would win. Just grateful there was no #WreckDana tweet with him sitting at his pool with the bucket. And finally, the #SouthwestClassic where Arkansas has a chance at a 4-0 start (hasn't happened since they were in the SWC. All participants were happy with the Tech win! Heartbroken bu the thunk... was pulling for #WooPig.

What a day of SWC Football - prime example of why the Southwest Conference should have never disbanded! But scheduling three #SWCmatchups at the same time was mean!

SEC SEC SEC
Big bad SEC team Texas A&M got beat by App State. They paid $1.5 million for that cupcake scheduling...

Rice Helmets
After a really cool NASA tribute last week with unis celebrating the ARTEMIS Program, Rice surprises us with the old school winged owl! It was in honor of the first black student football athletes.

Double OT W for TT
Week 2 matchup between Tech and UH. Double OT win for Tech! Currently one of only three Texas teams undefeated (doesn't last too long...).

JFK Moon Speech - 60 Years Later
Rice has typically had a NASA night - but this year to commemorate JFK's "We choose to go to the Moon" speech, Rice is wearing uniforms for the Artemis Program (goes back to the moon) with lots of good NASA hype.

In the Wash (in work)
Arkansas
Keep it classic - don't touch it. However, they did bring out the white helmet with foil decal for teh Southwest Classic.

Baylor
Same ole, same ole modern garb - but seems they are really digging the yellow (athletic gold , that is - as The Old Baylor Line is rolling over in their graves). Don't get me wrong, I am all for the incorporation of athletic gold - very old school - but only as an accent component. Pants with yellow and green stripes and a gold helmet will always be the best look. And why must Sailor Bear be locked in a vault only coming out for one game a year - which is NEVER an old SWC matchup...? So selfish.

Houston
Houston has continued playing with script - with a new "Houston" helmet. But the biggest news is somehow those beautiful unis with the classic stripes have gone missing and these ugly cookie cutter things are in their place.

Rice
Rice is having some fun this year. On top of the NASA Artemis Program tribute for the "space game" centered around 60 years since JFK's Go To The Moon speach, they have brought back the winged owl and the Rice script helmets - WITH STRIPES! As they went back to the Texas outline helmets n the following weeks, they even asked the twitterverse if they should keep the stripes.

SMU
Same classic uni with the Dallas alternate. But they did throw out a new color combo with blue pants - but they need stripes. And have added a memorial decal for super fan Paul Layne who died. However, they trotted out some black and blue garbage against Cougar High with zero red... and then won handily. Sigh.

Texas
Absolutely nothing needs to change here EVER.

Texas A&M
Still wearing the XXX era plain maroon jersey with white sleeve cuffs they adopted back in XXX. However, I do approve of the white facemask. Two words for teh Aggies: PANTS STRIPES.

TCU
TCU made a move this year to get rid of the helmet stripes (purple helmets, White helmets) and have done some minor changeups XXX.

Texas Tech
Tech has widened the metallic helmet stripe and of course keeps us happy with throwbacks. The first one was a XXX. And the second one was all black - which based on where I am on my Tech uni history research was worn in 1988 at the Coca Cola Classic in Tokyo. Keep in mind this is all black WITH stripes on both the helmet and pants. A third set was worn as well - another throwback combo not done before - the glorious red pants tributing the Billy Joe Tolliver era since he went undefeated against TCU.

10.13.08 - Susan, I love your web-site, SWCFootball. -Jay B

09.03.08 - I had to chuckle whena I read that SMU is going back to their "roots" by sporting white helmets. If they truly wished to go back that far, they'd wear all red (leather or plastic). As a native San Antonian, I remember their uniforms from the Doak Walker-Kyle Rote-Pat Knight era: red helmets (no stripes), red jerseys (no stripes), white numerals, and gray pants. No blue at all to be seen. (For what it's worth, in the 1940s I watched many a high school game with Rote and Knight in the backfield for the Jefferson Mustangs.) Much to my father's annoyance, each football season I'd plaster the windows of the family car with those Humble Oil giveaway pennants in SWC team colors. As I recall they were placed on the outside of the windows and made for difficult removal (once the season was over, that chore was mine). Keep up the good work. -Warren Thompson, Lebanon PA

09.03.08 - BTW, Susan, that's an amazing site on SWC you have. Good work. -Justin in AR (via Uni Watch)

07.04.08 - I love your SWC site. I've put up a season-ending wrap the last two years: the final SWC standings, using Jeff Sagarin's rankings. Hope you'll check it out. Go Owls! -John Cunyus
